  • Distance Decisions for College Admission Fall 2020

Extraordinary responses to the coronavirus pandemic have displaced students and upended educational access. The Class of 2020 high school seniors (as well as high school juniors) are challenged to prepare for college at home, away from college counselors and college preparatory teachers.

Future Sacramento is providing resources and information to help the students our community make Distance Decisions for their College Choices for Fall 2020 (and beyond). Donate to help displaced students.

Each potential college will lead students down a unique path, following its own timeline, toward an exciting new reality. Your choice of where to enroll will not make or break you. The most important action is what you do when you get to college. Avoid myths when choosing your college.

Don’t pick a school based only on:

  • brand name recognition (does not mean it is right fit for YOU)
  • the look and feel of campus (this does not ensure a quality education or that it will land you a great paying job after school)
  • convenience of location (a school further from you may have more benefits for you)
  • enrollment choices of friends (do not be a follower, select the right fit for you)

MYTH: My grades during my last term in high school do not affect my college admission.

FACT: Colleges may reserve the right to deny admission to an accepted applicant should the student’s senior-year grades drop.

Colleges see both a midyear grade report and a final (year-end) transcript and they expect students to maintain previous levels of academic success. The pressure is not off - keep up the good work!

Do not catch Senioritis! Keep up the good work. Run THROUGH the finish line of graduation.

“Senioritis, a tongue-in-cheek term for a decline in high school seniors’ motivation…. But such a light-hearted take belies the harm senioritis can have on students’ immediate and future academic performance.” Counseling@NYU Staff

Urban Dictionary describes this as “a crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include: laziness. Also features a a generally dismissive attitude.”

Ensure that you are set-up to receive, record and respond to any and all messages from the college campuses to which you applied.

You cannot miss deadlines.
Many colleges use a messaging system that is contained inside their student online portal – if so, set up a schedule to log in and check your message inbox. Colleges may send you emails that include deadline tasks and requests for more information. Make sure they are going to spam or getting lost in your busy inbox. Check your U.S. Mail box too!
